Some people may do things to get attention. Some give attention to the little things (even when no one is looking).
It was almost the end of the semester, and the Student Government
Officers were getting together soon to discuss end-of-the-year awards.
Which student had raised the most money? Who participated in the most
charities? Who had the most school spirit? Was there someone who really
went above and beyond this year?
Recommendations and nominations
started coming in quickly, names of students we all knew, whom everyone
had seen getting involved. But I kept coming back to this one person. I
couldn't recall her name, but I remembered that she is a member of Delta
Zeta. I saw her on Saturdays at the retirement home, at Homecoming
greeting alums, handing out flyers for the charity bake sale - and she
was usually with her Delta Zeta sisters, who were doing the same things.
As I looked back through the pictures of our past events, I saw her,
always busy, always there, in the background, doing the little things
that made a big difference.
As she stepped up to receive the biggest
award of the night, we all got a chance to remember that the right thing
isn't working hard to get attention; it's paying attention to the
little things. In her thank you speech, she said that Delta Zeta's Creed
says, "I promise temperance and insight and courage, To crusade for
justice, To seek the truth and defend it always." I know she lives that
truth every day.
